Fishing is widely recognized as one of the most dangerous occupations around the globe. Small-scale fishing communities are essential for the development of this activity. However, universal access to basic health promotion services and prevention of work-related accidents and diseases—the so-called Basic Occupational Safety and Health—is limited or non-existent for the inhabitants of these communities.

Since the safety and health of workers in small-scale fishing communities depend on multiple factors, comprehensive health approaches are needed to analyze the problems and find solutions. Transdisciplinary initiatives, community participation, and social equity are essential for this purpose.
