It was an ordinary day when Maya, a pharmacist, had to change her workplace and start at a new pharmacy. Her first thought was that the pharmacy wasn't new at all. Everything was dusty, the medicines looked like they had expired centuries ago, and the room looked as if a hurricane had hit it. Let's not even talk about digitalization.
If the main room looks like this, how must the basement be!?
Maya
The basement was a treasure trove of ancient medicines, scripts, and jars, as if no one had touched them for a very long time, let alone used them. It was incredibly surprising that no one had discovered this room until now and that it was Maya who stumbled upon it.
It doesn't seem like I'm here by chance at all. Why was I transferred to this pharmacy specifically? Someone must be behind this; I need to find out what's going on as soon as possible.
Maya
In the middle of the room stood a small wooden table with a book wrapped in brown velvet. When she opened the book, the first thing she saw was an ancient map that spread across the entire East. Then came pages full of narratives about ancient methods and customs of healing from China, India, Egypt, all of Africa, and the rest of Asia.
What does this mean? Am I supposed to follow the map? No, this must be an encyclopedia of old healing customs and has nothing to do with the present. I mean, I'd love to research these ancient customs, but when would I ever get the chance, and what do they have to do with me? Besides, I can read everything on the internet or get information from my books; after all, I did graduate in pharmacy. I absolutely don't believe in traditional healing methods and old wives' tales.
Maya
What Maya didn't expect to find was a small note on an envelope located on the last pages of the book with a message: The journey that follows is not just to discover the truth but to discover yourself. The envelope contained money meant for the journey.
I can't believe it, am I just supposed to go to the East like that? Honestly, I need an escape and a break from this daily routine. An adventure wouldn't hurt.
Maya
Maya packed her bags, informed her parents and friends that she was going on a business trip, and immediately went to the airport heading straight to China. She made sure to bring a bunch of old books from that ancient pharmacy with her and decided to verify everything on the internet to avoid being deceived.
I'm excited about this trip, but I'm a little scared of going alone. What if something happens? I've never traveled this far alone...
Maya
Despite her worries, Maya safely arrived in China and somehow managed to calm down when she encountered the beauty and mystery of a new culture. What she didn't know was that she wouldn't stay in the urban area for long.
The map led to a village named Ni Hao, which wasn't marked on the internet, but there were some directions.
The longer I walk, the less signal I have. I'm really afraid I'll end up in some backwater place where no one will ever find me, especially since this place isn't even on the map.
Maya
When she arrived at her first destination, the small village of Ni Hao, she was greeted by a small family of settlers who said they knew their task and would show her the methods they used in their village, where there were no hospitals, no signal, and nothing modern. Maya felt calmer now, but still found it strange that these people knew she was coming and knew there would be no signal, while she was completely in the dark. Before entering the room with several patients, they introduced Maya to Asher. Asher was described as a young researcher who had embarked on a journey to the East to discover the wonders of new technologies and the ease of travel, instead of traveling everywhere on horseback.
Nice to meet you, I'm Maya. It seems that you and I are on the same journey under opposite circumstances; I regret not having a signal and no access to technology, while you are just exploring it.
Maya
Nice to meet you too, and I'm glad to be your companion on this journey. Maybe we can learn something from each other.
Asher
After seeing how this small family managed to cure a severe cough using various ointments and creams, Maya, although not changing her opinion about natural healing methods, started writing everything down so she could examine these findings later. She thanked the family, and then she and Asher continued following the map.
Maya: Asher, I have to ask you something. When you said you would be my companion on this journey, what did you mean, or rather, how did you know?
Asher: I received a letter containing the same map you have, money, and the message, The journey that follows is not just to discover the truth but to discover yourself.
Maya: I received the same message, but on a note in a book. Did you get a book and a note with your name on it?
Asher: I only received a note with my name in the letter, but I didn't get any book. Instead, I got this phone with all the coordinates so I could follow the map.
Maya: That's really strange. It ties into what I was saying earlier—your path leads to technology, while mine takes me further from it.
Asher: Maybe it's meant to create some kind of balance. Just as I believe everything in life leads to some balance.
Maya: Maybe. Nicely said. Although, I haven't thought about that in a long time. Sometimes it feels like I forget to think about things and just absorb content.
Asher: I totally understand. For me, it's the opposite. As I said, maybe our meeting is fate, so we can learn something from each other. Or maybe it's just arranged for us.
The rest of the journey involved various modes of transportation to reach the next destination. But what they didn't anticipate was that they would be riding a camel.
I guess this is your first time in a desert. Where I come from, in Arizona, we have deserts, but I haven't seen camels yet.
Maya: I wonder what else I'll encounter on this journey. The last thing I need is for someone to use healing methods on me or ask me to open up and talk about my traumas.
Asher: You always think about the worst-case scenarios. But speaking of that, why would it be so bad to talk about your traumas? If someone listens to you, they might have some advice or help you, or at least you'll feel better after confiding in someone.
Maya: I don't need any help, thank you. I can take care of myself and my mental and emotional health, and besides, I don't trust anyone else.
Asher: After that statement, I'm not sure about what you said. I think it's important for people to connect and learn from each other.
Maya: I don't want to connect with anyone, especially not with you.
Asher: Every time you contradict me, it makes me believe the opposite of what you're saying.
Maya: Whatever. I don't want to argue. I just want to make the most of this journey, do my job, and return home in peace.
In the Egyptian desert, a small group awaited them under a tent. After everyone got acquainted, they led Maya to a man covered in wounds. They treated deeper wounds with honey and the rest with aloe vera juice, then bandaged them. In the morning, everyone was surprised by the result; the wounds were less painful and there was much less bleeding.
I have to admit, I didn't know something like this was possible. I might have read about this method before, but I never thought it was actually effective and never saw it in practice.
Maya
The group thanked her and gave her a bottle of honey and aloe vera juice. They then informed her that a healer named Zara would guide them to the next location.
Zara was a short girl with long brown hair, appearing almost like a sorceress. It was hard to tell if she was 16 or 46. She wasn't very talkative, seemed tired, and kept mumbling to herself.
Maya: Well, Zara, we're glad you'll be guiding us through Africa. You don't look like you're from here, just like us.
Zara: My child, I have no home and never have. The world is my home, and I'd say I come from a bit of everywhere. Home is where you have your loved ones and where you feel safe, and for me, that's everywhere. I leave traces everywhere and always connect with someone.
Asher: That's exactly what I told her. I'm glad we agree. I'd love to hear more about your travels and adventures.
Maya: You two go ahead and talk. I think I'll go to sleep. I'm tired.
While Asher and Zara talked, Maya tried to sleep. She wasn't really that sleepy; it was just an excuse. She didn't want to talk, especially since Asher seemed so drawn to Zara.
I don't even know why I'm jealous. It's not like any of this matters. In a few days, I'll be home, and all of this will be just a nice memory and a passing adventure. Or at least I keep telling myself that...
Maya
In the morning, they arrived in a small village called Timbuktu, where they were supposed to meet an African tribe and see a ritual for making medicinal herbs to help those with cramps and severe stomach pain.
Zara: This tribe taught me how to live as a nomad and heal from various pains or less dangerous illnesses using different plants. The most significant ones were ginger, fennel, mint, turmeric, and chamomile.
Maya: Did you become a sage after learning their rituals?
Asher: Why do you talk so condescendingly? Zara is here to help us. You could learn something from her about treating people and creating community.
Zara: It's okay. I understood what she meant. I wouldn't call myself a sage. I'm a collector of experiences, and all the knowledge I have comes from years and years of experience and getting to know various peoples and their rituals. I only apply what I find necessary when the time comes and respect their rituals. But I also have my own customs. What matters is that there's so much beauty in learning about other people's customs.
Maya: I'm sorry. I didn't mean it the way it sounded. Thank you for the explanation. I think I'm just too skeptical, but after all this, I see how beautiful and important it is to have a community that supports each other and members who care so much for one another. Asher, it's okay. You don't have to criticize me. I understand where I'm wrong.
The tribe's leader invited them to a celebration after the ritual to experience that part of their culture. They gave Maya their traditional clothing and jewelry to make her feel authentic and at home. Everyone enjoyed the rest of the evening together. The chief gave Maya a handwritten recipe book, and in return, she shared some methods involving minerals from nature, which might be new and interesting for them to learn. She then said goodbye to everyone and to Zara, as they were to leave for the final destination in the morning and then return home.
Maya: It has been an invaluable experience spending time with you and getting to know your culture. But most importantly, I've learned how wonderful it is to have close people around you, both in good times and bad. I think I'll appreciate people and their presence more from now on and try not to be so closed off. Zara, thank you for everything you've taught me. I'm glad I can say I know you and that you're my friend.
Zara: Maya, every journey and experience is meant to teach us something. I believe you've learned a lot from this experience. Don't doubt that we'll meet again someday, my friend.
The journey was close to its end, and the final destination was a temple in a small town in India. The only scene that kept changing was the people coming and going to pray. There were old and young, happy and sad, but all were united by faith and love. Maya and Asher sat all day watching these scenes until night fell and it was time to sleep.
Asher: Hey, Maya, I want to tell you something. Actually, I want to apologize for criticizing you so much. I don't mean anything bad about you. Since I learned my task was to accompany you, I also felt it was my duty to protect you. I want you to be the best version of yourself, just as I would want for anyone who matters to me.
Maya: I matter to you?
Asher: Of course, why is that in question? We've spent so much time on this journey together. I've seen you change and witnessed your good and bad moments. Of course, it all means a lot to me. And not just that, I'd love to see you more and get closer and know each other better if you feel the same.
Maya: I thought you didn't even notice me, while I noticed you all the time—your determination, straightforwardness, and thoughtfulness, everything I think I lack I saw in you.
Asher: I noticed only you. Your courage, empathy, readiness for all situations, and consistency with yourself, among many other qualities.
Maya: Being with you made me forget about technology, and I think you've gotten used to it using all these maps and navigation.
Asher: Yes, I think we complement each other perfectly.
The journey had come to an end, and Maya and Asher returned to their homes. After everything, Maya learned not only to believe in natural healing and in people and their abilities, not just in the internet and modern treatments, but also how important it is to build relationships, connect with people, and ultimately, believe in love.
What remained to be discovered was who "set up" the entire situation and planned the journey. The pharmacy owner, Maya's cousin, revealed that their great-grandmother Maya and her unfulfilled love, Asher, had founded the first pharmacy in their town half a century ago and had decided that if they didn't succeed, they would give their descendants a chance to be together when the time was right. And so, whether by fate or not, this journey happened. After this, Maya and Asher began writing their own destiny.
