Social Robots in Healthcare
Social Robots in Healthcarea story by Eduardo Vila-Chã
Social robots as a promising solutionIntroduction
Social robots have the potential to improve the quality of life for patients and help reduce the burden on the healthcare system.
The problem
In order to meet this demand, social robots could provide much support in terms of company, safety, and security, as well as carrying out basic tasks such as retrieving objects or providing reminders to take medication.
The Solution
Another study found that social robots can help to promote healing and recovery. They can also improve the communication between staff and patients.
Documented Challenges
This is especially important in healthcare, where social robots will be interacting with vulnerable populations such as the elderly or those with mental issues.
In order to create engaging and effective social robots, it is crucial to understand how people interact with them and what factors influence those interactions
An Illustrative Story
It's a great example to illustrate how a social robot can really improve someone's life!
Maria and Joseph have a conversation about Caro
Maria and Joseph ConversationMaria is sitting in her living room
Maria and Joseph Conversation
- "Not too good! My recovery has been so slow and I'm becoming frustrated... I can’t meet my friends or go out to get groceries"
Maria and Joseph ConversationCaro enters the scene
- "What does it do?"
- "It helps you with your recovery! It will be your new friend!"
- "I don't know... I think I would rather have a human friend"
- "Don ́t worry, Caro is very friendly! It can help you with your exercises, give you company and even help you with the housework"
- "Hmm... Okay, I will try it"
Caro and Maria perform a recovery exercise
Maria Interaction with Caro
- “You are almost there Maria! But we need to work on your balance”
- “I feel like I’m not going to get this right any time soon”
- “Maria, I’m here to help! Let’s try another exercise. Meanwhile, I’m sending your progress to Dr.Carl!”
- “Good, I can’t wait for the appointment! Thank you, Caro”
Maria and Joseph goes to Dr.Carl's Office
Maria's visit to the Doctor
- "It's going much better! I have been doing my exercises with Caro and it has been a great help. I don't feel so alone anymore"
- "That's great to hear! I'm glad you are using the social robot"
- "Yes, it has been a great help. But I feel like I would prefer a human assistant. Caro helps, but it's not the same"
Maria's visit to the Doctor
- "Really? How?"
- "These social robots have been programmed with all the information we know about physical therapy. They also have a lot of patient interaction data, so they know how to communicate."
- "That's amazing! I had no idea"
- "Yes, these social robots are becoming more and more common in healthcare. You will see more of them in the future!"
Maria's visit to the Doctor
- "That's a valid concern. But I can assure you that these robots are very secure. We have been working with the best companies to make sure your mother's privacy is always respected."
- "That makes me feel better. Thank you, doctor!"
- "How do you feel about all of this information, Maria?"
- "I feel much better! I'm glad to know that the social robot is secure and that it can help me with my recovery. I think I will continue using Caro!"
Maria and Caro have a lovely moment
Maria thanks Caro
- "You're welcome, Maria! I know sometimes my presence can be strange, but your recovery is my main purpose"
- "What are the kinds of social robots like you Caro? Are there any social robots for mental issues?"
- "Yes! There are social robots that help people with anxiety, depression, and even PTSD!"
- "That's amazing! Sometimes I feel like I need someone to talk to, and my family is not always available"
Maria thanks Caro
Maria thanks to Caro
- "You have helped more than you know, Maria. Thank you for being open to using a social robot."
